Metal etching is a process whereby a metal plate is coated in a wax surface, into which the line drawing is drawn with a sharp needle. The plate is immersed in acid to develop etching lines. Subsequent immersions result in development of tone and texture. This method of image creation was employed for centuries and made famous by artists such as Rembrandt and Goya.
